Digging in caliche, and the trenchless question
Trenching a sewer line in the Valley is harder than in soft-soil regions because caliche is close to concrete underground, so excavation is slower and access matters. Where the pipe path and depth allow it, trenchless methods can replace a line with far less digging, which is often gentler on mature landscaping and hardscape. The Arizona 811 locate that comes before any dig
Before we open the ground for a sewer repair, we call in an Arizona 811 locate, the free service also known as Arizona Blue Stake, which marks the buried gas, water, power and communication lines on the property. This is not a formality. Valley yards are crowded underground, and striking a gas or power line while digging for a sewer is exactly the avoidable disaster the locate prevents. It also tells us where we can safely trench and where we cannot, which shapes whether an open dig or a trenchless approach makes sense. Combined with the camera pinning the fault to the foot, the 811 marks let us dig once, in the right place, without hitting anything else, which on hard caliche ground is worth getting right the first time.
Every sewer recommendation follows a recorded camera inspection, and when the line is sound but coated we clear it with hydro jetting instead of replacing it. How do I know if it's the sewer line and not just a clog?
When more than one fixture backs up at once, especially toilets and the lowest drains, and clearing it only helps for a short time, the lateral itself is usually the problem. A camera run settles it: a soft blockage looks completely different from roots, an offset joint or a collapse.
Is trenchless always better than digging?

Why is a sewer dig harder here than elsewhere?
